What is Geography?

11th December 2009

No quick Fix

Author: RGS-IBG

Letter in the TES from Steve Brace, RGS-IBG
It is a mistake to think a geography teacher grabbing their pocket French dictionary, or a French teacher reaching for an atlas, is a simple solution to the decline in language teaching, as the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust (SSAT) is reported to have suggested last week. Ofsted has said that a teacher's "good subject knowledge is an essential pre-requisite for good teaching". What our pupils deserve is high-quality teaching by a teacher who is passionate and knowledgeable about their specialist subject. A quick fix of 'frography' will lead to une catastrophe assuree.
