The power of geography
Amongst the 150,000 passengers stranded worldwide as a result of the flight restrictions imposed on northern Europe because of the ash cloud from the eruption of the Icelandic volcano Eiyafiatdaiokudl, are hundreds of academic geographers who were in Washington DC in the United States for the annual Association of American Geographers (AAG) conference.
Included in those stranded in the US capitol are Dr Rita Gardner and Dr Catherine Souch, Director and Head of Higher Education of the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) respectively.
Listen to Dr Rita Gardner, the RGS-IBG's Director, talking on BBC radio about the power of geography. Her interview is 10 minutes in to the programme.
