Ambassadors
Get Involved - Benefits to Universities
What training will the Ambassadors receive?
The Ambassadors will be thoroughly briefed on techniques to use in the classroom, presentation skills and activities they could facilitate. The training will give them excellent transferable skills that will improve their employability.
Training for Ambassadors will be held at various locations. Please check the grey box on the right for dates and times.
We will be adding more London and regional dates soon. If you would be interested in hosting one of our training events, please contact us.
We would be grateful if you would:
- Print and display the poster on your departmental noticeboard
- Advertise the scheme in your next newsletter.
- Contact us and arrange for us to visit your department. We are very keen to meet your students to encourage them to sign up to the ambassador scheme. Would you be prepared to let us talk to them informally or do a brief presentation at the start or end of a class or lecture?
What kind of activities could ambassadors offer?
The scheme will begin with one visit to a school. Ambassadors may work on their own or in a pair if they prefer. Ambassadors are likely to begin by delivering a talk or presentation with activities to groups on one of the following themes:
- Why I love geography
- Geography and careers
- Working in another country or region or Gap years
- My special project or research
- Studying geography at university
Ambassadors could also participate in other activities such as:
- Homework clubs
- Geography clubs -after school or at lunchtime.
- Revision sessions
- Supporting teachers in geography lessons
- Supporting an event or competition
Ambassadors may also:
- Provide support for teachers in the classroom environment
- Share their specialist knowledge to enhance the teaching and learning of geography
- Provide IT support when necessary
- Provide gifted and talented students and those who need extra help with one-to-one tuition
- Facilitate geography projects in the classroom and during after school / lunchtime clubs
- Be involved in e-mentoring
How do I find out more?
We are really keen to hear from universities interested in taking part in the scheme by advertising it to students, offering us a room to run training or liaising with us over schools activities in the local area. The Ambassador Project Manager, Kate Amis, is part of the Action Plan for Geography team at the RGS-IBG in London. You can contact Kate on 0207 591 3045 or via email at ambassadors@rgs.org.
