Ambassadors

Get Involved - Graduates - become a Geography Ambassador

Author: RGS-IBG

What type of work will I be doing in schools?
The scheme will usually begin with one visit to a school. Ambassadors may work on their own or in a pair if they prefer. You may be asked to team up with a current undergraduate for example.

Ambassadors are likely to begin by delivering a talk or presentation with activities to groups on one theme such as Why I love geography, My career and how geography has helped me or my geography project or research.

Graduate Ambassadors will be much sought after to participate in other activities such as Careers events or to share their specialist knowledge to enhance the teaching and learning of geography in class or at special geography or master class type events.

How much time am I committing to here?
The scheme offers you the chance to 'put something back'. We are grateful for your enthusiasm and time as we recognise that you also have work priorities to consider. Some volunteers may only wish to commit to an initial visit with a total time commitment of a just a couple of hours. Some ambassadors, finding the experience very rewarding, will develop a longer relationship with the pupils and the school or even visit other schools in their region. At whichever level ambassadors are involved they are expected to abide by a professional code of conduct and show enthusiasm and full commitment to the aims of the project.

What about training and expenses?
All ambassadors are required to attend a two hour training session. A variety of dates and regional locations are offered in the coming months. Please check the grey box on the right for details of dates and times.

Training will be lively and hands on with the aim of ensuring ambassadors are clear and comfortable in their new role and confident to deliver a presentation to a group of secondary pupils. Additional resources and support will be given to all ambassadors to help them deliver the menu of activities offered to schools.

Ambassadors will also be required to complete a CRB form and provide details of their availability. All expenses including travel will be reimbursed.

How do I find out more?
