Ambassadors

Get Involved - Teachers - book a Geography Ambassador to inspire your students

Author: RGS-IBG

The ambassador scheme is a great way to introduce students to the benefits of studying geography and encourage them to pursue the subject beyond the compulsory stages.

There is no financial cost to the school and a minimal paperwork requirement. Ambassador involvement will offer potential extra help during geography lessons to enhance the teaching and learning of the subject, a chance to integrate with the local geographical HE and business communities, increased achievement and motivation, positive role models for pupils and, potentially, increased uptake in geography at GCSE and A Level.

Where are the ambassadors recruited from?
We have recruited and trained ambassadors from a wide range of backgrounds in terms of education and qualification pathways, experience, gender, ethnic origin and career aspiration. We are approaching university geography departments all around England, asking them too encourage their geographers to get involved in the scheme. We are training students in presentation and facilitation skills across a broad menu of activities. We will endeavour to provide you with the best fit for the needs of your pupils.

What kind of activities could ambassadors offer?
The scheme will begin with one visit to a school. Ambassadors may work on their own or in a pair if they prefer. Ambassadors are likely to begin by delivering a talk or presentation with activities to groups on one of the following themes:

  • Why I love geography
  • Geography and careers
  • Working in another country or region or Gap years
  • My special project or research
  • Studying geography at university

Ambassadors could also participate in other activities such as:

  • Homework clubs
  • Geography clubs -after school or at lunchtime.
  • Revision sessions
  • Supporting teachers in geography lessons
  • Supporting an event or competition

Ambassadors may also:

  • Provide support for teachers in the classroom environment
  • Share their specialist knowledge to enhance the teaching and learning of geography
  • Provide IT support when necessary
  • Provide gifted and talented students and those who need extra help with one-to-one tuition
  • Facilitate geography projects in the classroom and during after school / lunchtime clubs
  • Be involved in e-mentoring
