Ambassadors

Get Involved - Undergraduates - become a Geography Ambassador

Author: RGS-IBG

I am studying geography at university. How can I get involved?
The scheme will begin with one visit to a school. Ambassadors may work on their own or in a pair if they prefer.

Ambassadors are likely to begin by delivering a talk or presentation with activities to groups on a theme such as

  • Why I love geography
  • My career and how geography has helped me
  • Using geography as a career
  • Working  in another country or region
  • Gap years
  • My special project or research
  • Studying geography at university

Ambassadors could also participate in other activities such as geography clubs, revision sessions, special competitions or fieldwork activities.

How much time am I committing to?
We are grateful for your enthusiasm and time as we recognise that you also have study and work priorities to balance. Some volunteers, after training, may only wish to commit to an initial ambassador visit with a total time commitment of just a couple of hours. Others, finding the experience very rewarding, will develop a longer relationship with the pupils and the school or even visit other schools in their region. At whichever level ambassadors are involved they are expected to abide by a professional code of conduct and show enthusiasm and full commitment to the aims of the project.

What kind of training is offered?
Ambassadors are required to attend a three hour training session. A variety of dates and regional locations are offered over the coming months. Please check the grey box on the right for dates and times.

Training will be lively and hands on with the aim of ensuring ambassadors are clear and comfortable in their new role and confident to deliver a presentation to a group of secondary pupils. Additional resources and support will be given to all ambassadors based on the ‘menu of activities’ above. Ambassadors will also be required to complete a CRB form and provide details of their availability.
