Bromley Geography Project (Kent)
Fieldwork day at BEECHE
On the 3rd March 2009, a group of students and teachers spent a day at Bromley Environmental Education Centre at High Elms (BEECHE) doing some fieldwork activities.
The schools involved were:
- Glebe School
- Riverside School
- Bishop Justus School
- Newstead Wood School
- Charles Darwin School
- Eltham Hill School
I think the Beeche centre was brilliant, the activities kept us occupied all the time so there was never a dull moment. We examined the area and chose our favourite place. We collected things to remind us of it, to help us invent some natural perfumes. In the afternoon we fished in the pond for wildlife. It was a truly outstanding experience and I hope to go there again.

The aim of the day was to bring together some of the students from our previous fieldwork day to work with students from the new schools to decide whether High Elms should become a World Heritage site.

The day began with students taking photographs of their favourite spots in the nature garden. The students were then put into groups to share their photos and between them decide which area was their favourite overall and why.

While they were taking pictures, the students were asked to collect items from the garden to tie onto a piece of string. This was to remind them of the places they visited and photographed.

Whilst in the garden the students were also asked to think of a word that best described the area. Back in the classroom they shared these words and made some haiku poems.

Later that morning the students were asked to create a 'smelly cocktail' from items in the garden. This was then to be marketed as a perfume to attract people to High Elms. The students worked on their marketing poster in groups, then presented their pitch to the class.
The afternoon was spent pond dipping in an area used by Charles Darwin for his research.
