Teaching Ideas - A postcard from Japan
Julie Williamson
Thirsk School
Author: This project was aimed at Year 9 students across a variety of ability groups. I used Movie Maker as an assessment task with the unit about Japan as an MEDC. The aim of the task was to produce a short movie to be used by the Japanese Tourist Commission, as a way of introducing visitors to Japan before they arrive. This work also helped encourage students to be thoughtful about the images they selected - keeping to their chosen theme and focus rather than searching randomly for images on the internet.
The students took part in peer assessment to evaluate, reflect and comment on eachother's movie presentations.
Course Leader: This plan shows how students were given a platform to express their knowledge of Japan at the end of their unit of study. Clear guidance to keep students focused and encourage the development of Place and Cultural understanding and diversity. The choice of Movie Maker as a tool is an appropriate choice for the students to use as a platform to communicate with their peers.
