Teaching Ideas - Housing Estates - Building Sustainable Communities

Author: Geographical Association

This is a piece of work we have trialled in readiness for the new KS3 changes in Geography. It is part of a package of lessons lasting half a term and focusing on how we can make the places we live in safer, more attractive, energy efficient and with a range of facilities for everyone. The package of lessons involved a short field survey of our local area where we could see some of the potential for improvements. The study culminated in making an actual housing estate with a number of improvements ranging from solar panels to zebra crossings and health centres . The pupils enjoyed the latter most of all and through it were able to apply their knowledge of sustainable communities with flair and imagination.
