Teaching Ideas - Water around us
Sue
Newcastle

Course Leader: Sue took an inter-disciplinary approach which brought in History and DT as well as building on previous work done through art. The key aspect of her work was to make the learning come alive as much as possible through active use of the locality. We chose to share some of Sue's work because:
- There was very careful reflection of how planning had impacted on learning
- There was a strong active fieldwork component
- The planning drew on local issues and resources to make the learning meaningful and relevant
- There were opportunities to practice and refine mapping skills
- The learning made links between the local and global dimensions
- Learning was applied, through active citizenship, to identify and reduce unnecessary water consumption
Author: The use of the local environment was a real lightbulb moment for the pupils and myself. Until we were out in the environment looking at the graveyards of the cholera victims and observing the fish ladder in the stream the children were interested but not excited.
My practice was affected by this use of what's on the doorstep and also by how the class enjoyed the challenge of an enquiry based learning - where they were more in charge of their own learning and I was more of a facilitator of learning than a deliverer of learning.
