Teaching Ideas - Who do we think we are?

North Reddish Junior School
We are a two and three form entry junior school in Stockport. We aim to develop a sense of pride and belonging for our children, to develop community links and raise the profile of geography.
Who do we think we are?
Objective: For the children to develop a sense of who they are and where they have come from. The work was carried out over the course of one week by Years 3 and 4.

We started the week off as Geographical detectives. We went on a trail of Reddish trying to solve the clues.
As part of the unit, children created a model of their local area. We were so proud of our model village that we even asked Andrew Gwynne, our local MP, to come and see it. He really liked it. We asked him loads of difficult questions about the local area and the improvements that he would like to see.

One of our activities was to go on a trip to Morrisons where most of us do our shopping. We looked at which countries all of the different products come from.
Download: Who do we think we are? (PPT, 1.4M) - contains more photos of the activities.

Evaluation
What worked well: creating a model village and the Careers Day where all speakers were parents who grew up in Reddish.
Further Developments
