Using Google Earth and GE Graphs

Date: Wednesday 14th July 2010, 2-5pm
Venue: Deanery C of E High School, Wigan

This free day of fieldwork CPD focused on using Google Maps, Google Earth and GE Graph for pre-fieldwork activities and to present fieldwork data.

Practical exercises included adding placemarks to Google Maps and Google Earth, creating layers in Google Earth, and creating bar charts, pie charts and choropleth maps using GE Graph.

This event was led by Tom Deacon, Senior Tutor at the Field Studies Centre at Rhyd-y-Creuau, Snowdonia.

As part of this network we have created a local 'fieldwork map'. Ultimately, the map will contain fieldwork resources developed by teachers from across North West England. It is hoped that over time this will build into rich resource of local fieldwork ideas and activities for teachers working in the North West.

Previous North West Network Event
Date: Tuesday 16th March 2010, 9.00am-3.30pm
Venue: Hothersall Lodge Outdoor Education Centre, Longridge, Preston

The second North West fieldwork network event took place in March 2010 at Hothersall Lodge Outdoor Education Centre near Preston. Twenty four teachers attended this full day of fieldwork CPD was divided into two sessions. During the the morning three speakers provided information and resources on river-based fieldwork opportunities in the North West, with a case study of the River Bollin, and GCESE controlled assessment. Speakers included representatives from the Geography Department at UCLAN, the Field Studies Council and Riverside College in Cheshire.

The afternoon was spent on Longridge Fell, where staff from the Hothersall Education Team shared some of the fieldwork opportunties available at the centre for KS3 level geography students. For more information on the field study activities available at Hothersall click here.

 

 

The first meeting of the North West fieldwork network was held in March 2009. Twenty-five teachers from the region attended the initial event, which took the form of a day of free local fieldwork CPD. The event was held on the Cronton campus of Riverside College Halton (hyperlink to www.riversidecollege.ac.uk) in Widnes, Cheshire . A range of speakers provided information and resources for fieldwork opportunities in the local area. They included representatives from Liverpool and Liverpool Hope Universities, and the Sefton Coast and Countryside Service. Fieldwork topics covered included fieldwork in the school grounds and local area, coastal fieldwork opportunities in Cheshire, a salt marsh ecology fieldtrip and inner city redevelopment and sustainable development in Liverpool.
