Local Fieldwork Toolkit

Author: RGS-IBG

The aim of this resource is to provide a framework for local fieldwork for Key Stage 3. It includes guidance for getting started with planning a trip, lists of useful contacts and ideas for activities.

There are four sections to the module:

1. Researching your local area: what are the opportunities for fieldwork?
This section includes guidelines for finding out about locations for fieldwork in your local area. It also highlights the opportunities for cross-curricular fieldwork links with subjects such as Citizenship, Science and Education for Sustainable Development.

2. Making contact: who can help you with your fieldwork?
This section provides information about centres and organisations that exist nationally that may be able to assist you with delivering your local fieldwork; either giving advice and information or leading activities in the field. Links to relevant websites are provided, along with information about the type of assistance available.

3. What you should know before you go
This section takes the form of a series of checklists to help you to organise your fieldtrip. This will ensure that you complete the necessary planning, preparation and paperwork for your trip.

4. Preparing and resourcing your fieldwork
The final section of the module includes a selection of brief ideas for activities that you might conduct in your local area, linked to the locations identified in section 1. There are links to available resources, and more detailed sections on urban and ecosystem studies.
