Places People Want
There are clear indications that settlement as a topic has become too settled and is in need of a shake-up. We need to explore the dynamism of place and people's mobility. We can consider academic perspectives and place-making that involves policies and practical action.
Developing this understanding and skills can be based on the everyday and immediate. It can be used as stimulus to look out beyond the familiar. The evidence for communities is all around us. We can evaluate what works and make suggestions for where it doesn't. We have an active part to play in creating 'places people want'.
Does your geography teaching...
- seek a response based on learners' personal experience?
- explore the full range of skills for active participation?
- provide a conceptual framework for evaluating place?
- illustrate professions and career options with learners?
Curriculum Making CPD Unit
Through this unit we cover:
- What is curriculum making?
- Where to start?
- What are the aims?
- What use are concepts?
- Does content still have a place?
- Enquiry - the catalyst in the curriculum?
- How do we ensure progression?
- How to bring it all together?
This unit has been written for all teachers of geography in all phases.
Transition in Geography Education CPD Unit
Have you been able to:
- make the most of your changing local geography?
- collaborate with colleagues in other schools about the power of geography?

Geography as a Resource CPD Unit
Geography, the curriculum resource
Through this unit we invite you to consider
- What is geography for
- Where has geography gone wrong
- What does it mean to 'think geographically'?
- What is the importance of enquiry?
- How do we cultivate enquiry in the classroom?
- Do textbooks still have a role?
- Less content - more learning?
- What would a localised curriculum look like?
As a geography teacher, you will need little persuasion of geography's extraordinary educational potential. Through this unit we examine geography as a curriculum resource. We argue that geography, like other subjects, should be the means that teachers use to achieve desirable ends, not a pot of content to be 'delivered' in time for the test. The power of geography as a curriculum resource is enormous.
This unit has been written for teachers of geography in all phases. Please select the resources and activities that are most useful to you.
Subject Leadership CPD Unit
In this unit you will have an opportunity to consider
- What is subject leadership?
- What does it mean to be a geographer?
- No geography! What would be missing?
- How do concepts help to frame the subject?
- What is geographical significance?
- How can we use geographical significance in curriculum making?
- How do we change the subject?
This unit has been written for teachers of geography in all phases. Please select the resources and activities that are most useful to you.

Key Stage 3 Geography and ICT
What is the relationship between ICT and geography? For example, we could ask about:

- how to develop geographical understanding through pupils’ use and experience of technology

I really do think that it warrants a wider audience as I bet few geography teachers have actually found out about it or have followed through the concepts that you go through with the active support of ASC, CABE etc. These materials should be in all geography departments and then, perhaps with other units like these, the subject of secondary school geography can be revitalised.
