Curriculum Opportunities - Using Google Earth - Changing climates
The purpose of this module is to explore the climates of today and predict the climates of the future. It aims to get students thinking about how and why climates change, what the impacts of this change might be, and how we can behave sustainably to limit the impacts of global warming.
Within this module, it is possible to use Google Earth for a range of activities, as outlined in the table below:
| Lesson 1: Weather or climate? | Use the Weather layers to show different weather conditions around the world. | |
| Lesson 2: Why is our climate like this? | Use the Weather layers to show different weather conditions around the world. | |
| Lesson 6: Hello from 2050 | Create a weather forecast for 2050 for six locations. Choose which location is the most vulnerable and add a placemark explaining the reasons for this. | Download ‘Hello from 2050' file |
Main Google Earth activity for this module
The main Google Earth activity for this module fits into Lesson 6: Hello from 2050. In this activity, students create a weather forecast for 2050 for six locations around the world. The activity aims to increase students' understanding of the range of different climate types in real places, the impact that future climates may have on different places, and the role that climate emissions play in changing climates.
In order to complete this activity, students will need to download the 'Hello from 2050' kml file and accompanying worksheet and location cards.
