Chartered Geographer (Teacher) - CPD ideas and guidance
Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is a career long process by which teachers can keep up to date in their subject and enhance their skills and knowledge for use in the classroom. There are a wide variety of activities that come under the CPD umbrella, and each of them enhances competence in teaching and provides up to date subject knowledge and innovation.
CPD has a range of benefits, both for the teacher and the students who benefit from their expertise. Ensuring that Chartered Geographer (Teacher) candidates undertake a set minimum amount of CPD means that students, colleagues, senior managers and parents are aware that any Chartered Geographer (Teacher) has up to date knowledge and experience in their subject and will provide the best possible expertise in and out of the classroom.
The benefits of CPD include:
- Ensures that teachers are doing the best possible job they can and are confident and prepared in all situations
- Provides long term career prospects and enhances professional standing
- Acknowledges your commitment to innovation and sharing your work with others
- Provides documented evidence of your commitment to your own professional development
- Provides material which can be used to support job and Chartered Geographer (Teacher) applications

What are the CPD requirements for Chartered Geographer (Teacher)?
In order to achieve Chartered Geographer (Teacher) status you need to be able to provide evidence that you have participated in a variety of CPD activities throughout your teaching career. Once you have been awarded Chartered status, you will be required to log all the CPD you do and submit that log annually to the RGS-IBG. The minimum number of CPD points per year you will need to collect as a Chartered Geographer (Teacher) is 35; with the general rule being 1 hour is CPD equals 1 CPD point. You will need to do at least 15 hours internal and 20 hours external CPD.
External hours may be accumulated by, for example, chairing or attending conferences and external seminars, presenting papers, leading/facilitating discussions and attending training courses relevant to teaching. This might also include In-Service training days or participation at an annual conference or meeting. External events are allocated in “hours worth” value by the Society. For example, attendance at a full day professional event will probably account for up to 5 CPD hours depending on relevance and level. Similarly, attendance for two days or more at the GA annual conference, for example, will be worth 10 external hours.
Internal hours may be accumulated by leading and taking part in internal seminars or workshops, internal training in school, leading field trips or by publication in peer-reviewed journals. Other internal hours may be accumulated by formal or informal training provided by the employer, systematic analysis of professional practice or by the mentoring of trainee teachers. Similarly time may be allocated for teachers who are training for other responsibilities such as pastoral posts, head of year, head of department, deputy head of school, financial and classroom management issues.
CPD opportunities from external organisations
- Discover the World. Discover the World recognises the need for teachers to experience their subject first hand and have for the first time introduced a CPD programme to Iceland for teachers who wish to enhance their teaching of geography by going on a field trip to one of the wonders of the world. The trip is based on single rooms and will give you an opportunity to explore ideas with fellow professionals as well as with their guide, Andy Jones, who is a trained geologist. There are still a few places on their inaugural trip departing Friday 7th March 2008, leaving Heathrow at 1300 and arriving back on the Sunday evening to minimise time away from the classroom. They also have a few places on a teacher inspection trip departing 9th April for teachers who may be planning a field trip to Iceland.
