Bristol fieldwork and CPD network
This discussion is an opportunity for the teachers who attended the fieldwork and CPD network meeting in Bristol on the 8th December 2006 to talk about ideas for resource development for the fieldwork area of this website. Please feel free to swap ideas and express your interest in taking part in this network.

Likewise I'd be very interested in preparing resources, and in researching sources of archived data. Do any schools have archived data going back some years for the same location. which could be used for comparison purposes?
I'd be glad if one of the main thrusts of the project is to make the limited time and opportunity to make geography meaningful outside the classroom . I'm quite happy with the fieldwork being enjoyable and memorable but I feel strongly it should be relevant. I'm not too happy with certain types of fieldwork which have been done in the past; techniques for techniques' sake. Examples are traffic counts, building functional classifications, and some aspects of physical geography (e.g. size of pebbles on a beach). Context for these, and others which are more appropriate, is vital.
It follows that I'm keen for fieldwork to be incorporated into schemes of work where relevant, rather than as a day during activities week at the end of the summer term. Do any schools have experience of setting fieldwork-based homework assignments during the school year?

1. Dick Bateman - 12 December 2006
I would certainly be up for helping with the fieldwork writing, especially with on-school-site fieldwork, affective domain fieldwork, weather observations/microclimate fieldwork, environmental evaluations, part sketch techniques, and digital image virtual fieldwork (for fieldwork preparation and post-visit de-brief and discussion).

To all those who attended on Friday 8th December
Many thanks for taking the time to meet with us- we hope you found it useful! The aim of this talk thread is to give those of you who wish to work together to produce some fieldwork resources for the Action Plan a chance to discuss potential ideas, and arrange a meeting to begin to develop the resources.
If anyone reading this did not attend on the 8th of December but would like to get involved in this Bristol CPD network, please email cgeogteacher@rgs.org
Thanks
Claire and Eleanor
