We have recently announced the release of our small and simple GPS device for use by children in fieldwork activities. It was featured in the meanderings section of the Autumn 2009 GA magazine. This device will allow field captured data to be geo-referenced. I would be interested to hear from schools how they might think about using this technology?

The Peak District National Park Learning Team have been organising and delivering innovative fieldwork courses at Losehill hall in Castleton for a number of years. Why not give us a ring on: 01433622457 or download our brochures from the website.

Jenny Jordan,
I know it will probably be a little late but we are currently writing a workshop for next year's GA conference in March, called Doorstep geography. It will give you lots of great ideas for out-of-classroom learning without all the risk assessments and planning!

I teach in a school in a secondary school in an urban environment. (inner city opposite major hospital) I would love to do some fieldwork with my students but I am finding it difficult to come up with ideas as I cannot get other teachers to accompany me outside of grounds, to help with supervision. But I feel that some sort of fieldwork is really necessary. does anyone have any ideas?

I really liked some of Phil's ideas in a different posting on this Talk section - reviewing the Bristol material, but I think that his ideas have real relevance and interest here. The idea of virtual fieldwork - video footage etc to get ideas going in the classroom and downloading material onto iPod's and MP3's is a brilliant one - I would be interested to hear some further ideas like this and think about how it could be realistically put into practice - have other people used things like this successfully, either at primary or secondary level?

This url will take you to a range of school examples of tried and tested fieldwork with downloadable materials. One of these examples is from my previous school so I can honestly say that it works, can be easily adapted for your school and has long lasting outcomes ('stained glass windows' for the school painted by us and also more intangible outcomes such as a real sense of achievement). We did it as a whole school project for Reception to Year 4 children and there is a medium term plan to download. http://www.qca.org.uk/geography/innovating/key2/planning_matters/medium-term-planning.htm
