The National Year of Reading (NYR) begins on Tuesday 1 April and is a year-long celebration of reading in all its forms. It aims to help build a greater national passion for reading in England - for children, families and adult learners alike.

Further Action Plan funding was announced by Minister for Schools and Learners Jim Knight MP at the GA Annual Conference on 27 March 2008. Following the enormous success of the first round of funding, a further £1.8m will ensure that dedicated support for geography teachers will continue for an additional three years.

The Guardian online has published a piece from Dr Rita Gardner, Director of the RGS-IBG, making the case for geography. This is in response to a survey today saying that a third of British children think Everest is in Europe.

MapPilot is a scheme funded by the DCSF and supported by Becta to provide improved access to Ordnance Survey digital map data. The project runs until July 2008 and already has around 50 schools at all phases enrolled in it. The purpose of the trial is to understand more fully the benefits of teaching with map data, especially using a Geographic Information System (GIS).

The new Secondary Curriculum, reviewed by QCA and unveiled this week, aims to free up around a quarter of the school day to enable teachers to give more help to pupils struggling to master the basics in English and Maths and raise standards higher across the board.

The Land Rover ‘Go Beyond’ Bursary, run by RGS-IBG on behalf of Land Rover, provides £10,000 funding and the use of a Land Rover 110 Defender vehicle to help the successful participants 'go beyond' when exploring their understanding of a particular geographical environment.

QCA has developed new geography materials for the Teacher assessment activities series for Key Stages 1 and 2. Designed to reinforce existing classroom practice and assessment methods, the geography materials provide examples of assessment activities to help teachers identify, track and enhance pupil progress in the classroom and during fieldwork.

The Learning Outside the Classroom Manifesto partnership was launched by the Secretary of State for Education and Skills on 28th November 2006. The Manifesto is a ‘movement’ or joint undertaking that many different stakeholders have helped to create and to which anyone can sign up. Its aim is to ensure that all young people have a variety of high quality learning experiences outside the classroom environment.
